were awarded a compensatory, non-tradeable first-round pick in the 2007
Draft as part of a resolution stemming from a controversy between the
Cougars, the Buffalo Stallions, and the Green Bay Cheese over Jeremy
Shockey, Julius Jones, and Deuce McAlister. As a result, all three
players were declared free agents, and only those three teams could bid
on the players (and could sign them to one-year contracts) during the
free agency portion of the 2006 Draft; in the event a team did not win
the bidding on the players and had attempted to bid on at least one of
them, they would receive the compensatory pick; the Cougars ultimately
received said pick and used it to select Kansas City Chiefs wide
